Paczkis

When I was growing up, my mom and her friend, Rose, got together before Lent to make Paczkis. Us kids would play all day while they worked on the dough. It was a whole-day affair. You start them first thing in the morning, and they are ready to be rolled out and fried in the late afternoon.

This year, my sister, Pam, wanted to resurrect the tradition. She did all the hard work of preparing the dough, and we joined her to roll and fry them. The boys loved it! They had so much fun cutting them out and (of course) eating them. There is nothing like a fresh, homemade Paczki rolled in sugar, fresh out of the oil!

The best thing was that Andrew kept calling them "Smoonch-keys." No matter how many times we said "Paczkis", he kept saying "Smoonch-keys". Priceless!
